A Georgia police chief is under investigation after claiming he accidentally shot his wife twice, police say.
The chief, William McCollom, called emergency dispatchers Thursday morning to report he accidentally shot his wife, according to the Peachtree City Police Department. Preliminary interviews found that McCollom shot his wife once, not twice as his initial call stated.
“The initial reports that we got from a 911 call were that the chief had shot his wife, accidentally, twice. As a result of our preliminary interview, we have found that he only shot her one time,” Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Sherry Lang told reporters.
Details surrounding the shooting are unclear, but McCollom’s service weapon did discharge, hitting his wife Margaret. She was airlifted to the Atlanta Medical Center, where she is listed in critical condition.
Charges have not been filed as of yet.
