The Detroit police officer responsible for the death of Aiyana Stanley-Jones is walking away a free man. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced to reporters on Wednesday that Officer Joseph Weekly will not be charged for the 7-year-old’s death. In 2010, Weekly fired his gun during a botched raid and killed the child while she was sleeping on the couch with her grandfather.
“Today we personally informed the family of Aiyana Stanley–Jones that we have made a decision that we would not be going to trial for a third time in the Joseph Weekley case,” Worthy said.
Weekly was charged with involuntary manslaughter and careless discharge of a firearm causing death. His first trial in 2013 ended in a mistrial and a judge dismissed the manslaughter charge during the second case. [Huff Post]
